How do I read my tyre size?

Take 205/55 R16 91V. 205 is the width in millimetres, 55 is the sidewall height as a percentage of that width, R means radial construction and 16 is the wheel size in inches. 91 is the load index (how much weight the tyre can carry) and V is the speed rating. Your replacement should match or exceed the load and speed rating.

FAQs

New tyres: your questions answered

Should I replace tyres in pairs?

You don't have to, but tyres on the same axle must be the same size and type, and similar tread depth keeps the car balanced under braking. If one tyre on an axle is much more worn than the other, replacing both is usually the safer choice. We'll look at your tyres and tell you honestly.

When should I replace my tyres?

By law a car tyre needs at least 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters, all the way round. Grip in the wet drops well before that, so many drivers change at around 3mm. Replace a tyre straight away if it has a bulge, a deep cut, exposed cord or heavy cracking from age.

What do the load index and speed rating mean?

The load index is a number, such as 91, that tells you the maximum weight each tyre can carry. The speed rating is a letter, such as V, for the maximum speed the tyre is designed for. Replacement tyres should match or exceed what your car's manufacturer specifies.
