What is a part-worn tyre?

A part-worn tyre is a tyre that has been used before but still has usable tread. In the UK it can only be sold if it meets the Motor Vehicle Tyres (Safety) Regulations 1994: at least 2mm of tread across its full width and all the way round, no cuts, lumps, bulges or exposed cord, and a permanent PART-WORN mark on the sidewall.

FAQs

Part-worn tyres: your questions answered

Can't see your question? Call 020 7485 4067 or see all our tyre FAQs.

Are part-worn tyres legal in the UK?

Yes. Part-worn tyres are legal to sell and use in the UK as long as they meet the Motor Vehicle Tyres (Safety) Regulations 1994. That means at least 2mm of tread across the whole tyre, no structural damage such as cuts, lumps or bulges, and a permanent PART-WORN mark on the sidewall in letters at least 4mm high.

Are part-worn tyres safe?

A part-worn tyre that meets the legal standard and has been properly checked is safe for everyday driving. The things that matter are tread depth, the condition of the sidewalls and the age of the tyre. We check all three before fitting. If you do a lot of motorway miles, we may suggest a new tyre instead.

How long will a part-worn tyre last?

It depends on how much tread is left, the size of the tyre and how and where you drive. A part-worn tyre has less tread than a new one, so it won't last as long, but it costs less. Ask us when you come in - we'll tell you roughly what to expect from the tyre in front of you.

Can I mix a part-worn tyre with new tyres?

Yes, but tyres on the same axle must be the same size and type, and ideally have similar tread. If one of your front tyres is nearly new and the other is worn, we'll talk you through the safest option, which can mean replacing both tyres on that axle.
